My journey into the world of real estate was a decade in the making. When I graduated college all I wanted to do was get into real estate. Right before I graduated the real estate market decided to crash. That didn't stop me from moving from the Midwest to Austin, but it did stop me from starting career in real estate. New city, no money, and a market crash tends to make you reevaluate you plan.

I ended up getting a sales job in the corporate world and working a second job to make ends meet. The best thing about that job was my boss. He was my first mentor. Hard-nosed yet compassionate.

After a few years there I took another sales job (better pay) in the same industry forcing me to move back to the Midwest. While that job was relatively short-lived, I realized it was time for me to go out on my own. That's when I should have went full-time in real estate. When you spend all of your free time reading real estate books and reports that should serve as enough of a hint to follow your intuition, but I didn't. Instead, I started a beef business with only one product and began selling it at farmers markets. Within the first 12 months the company had 12 different SKU’s sold in 500+ retail stores. Although that sounds like a successful business endeavor, working 7 days a week, doing everything to manage the business itself, and continuously pumping finances into the business became very draining.

What did I do? I started another condiment company with a partner.

After another year of working even harder, I found myself at a crossroads. I wasn't happy and it was time for change.

That's when I sold my half of the condiment company to my partner and shut down my beef company; perhaps it is going to make a come back one of these days. Ultimately, I moved back to Austin and finally began doing what I love – real estate.

I don't regret those years in the corporate world or the years spent running two food businesses. They taught me skills that will forever benefit me and my clients.

Now, I am at a point where only one thing matters – legacy. How will I be remembered? Was I known for always doing the right thing? Did I help others in need? Did I leave this world slightly better then when I entered it.

Aim high, never give up.
